Murray Hill Hotel from Park Avenue, 40th Street, Manhattan, 1935

1935

Silver print

Sans cadre: 25.2 x 20.1 cm (9 15/16 x 7 15/16 in.)

The Murray Hill Hotel’s iron balconies rise up the entire height of this black-and-white photograph. Their curved metal openwork occupies the right-hand side of the composition in the foreground, contrasting with the skyscraper’s sleek, orthogonal lines.

Between 1935 and 1939, Berenice Abbott spent five years photographing New York, where she relocated in 1929 after a long stay in Paris. Aiming to reenact Eugène Atget's pioneering project on the streets of Paris, the young photographer sought to capture the modernity and unbridled growth of the American megalopolis in a huge endeavour entitled Changing New York, from which this work is taken.

Murray Hill Hotel from Park Avenue, 40th Street, Manhattan, 1935 was first shown at the exhibition "Luogo e Segni" ("Place and Signs") at the Punta della Dogana in Venice in 2019.
