Minetta Street, Manhattan, 1935

1935

Silver print

19 x 24.2 cm (7 1/2 x 9 1/2 in.)

Filling the frame’s entire width, the subject of Minetta Street, Manhattan, 1935 is a group of humble, almost identical façades in the heart of New York City. Nevertheless, one stands out in contrasting light and shadow.

This picture of a typical New York façade belongs to the huge photography project "Changing New York", which Berenice Abbott spent five years working on from 1935 to 1939 as part of the Federal Art Project. Her aim was to create an exhaustive photographic portrait of the American megalopolis, including the most ordinary subjects, attesting to its swift growth.

Minetta Street, Manhattan, 1935 was presented for the first time by the Pinault Collection at the 2019 "Luogo e Segni" show at the Punta della Dogana in Venice.
