A drill bit drawn in black pencil stands out diagonally against a white sheet of paper. Choosing a close-up for such a common object enhances its formal character, which becomes almost abstract and sculptural and two-dimensional at the same time.
Around 1964-1965, Lee Lozano's drawings of tools or tool parts changed drastically to become, as in this example, detailed, realistic close-ups of drill bits, metal drills and rubber hoses. Male sexual metaphors pervade this series, which updates mimesis at the time of the technique.
This work is in the Pinault Collection along with similar drawings by the artist. It was presented at the Palazzo Grassi and Punta della Dogana during the 2009 group show "Mapping the Studio".
