Untitled 2012
2012
Oil on enamel on canvas
Panels: 300 x 242 cm (118 1/8 x 95 1/4 in.) (each) Overall dimensions : 300 × 736 cm (118 1/8 × 289 3/4 in.)
The giant triptych Untitled 2012 projects a vast pictorial field in metallic grey tones that captivate the gaze. The flat surface of the three canvases seems to become denser, to move and to be mirrored beneath the thickness of the enamel superimposed on the painted layers, while frenetic brush strokes give the work a certain dynamism.
This hypnotic and contemplative work attests to the artist's quest to surpass two-dimensionality in painting and reverse the usual spatial relationships between work and viewer. Deconstructing the dichotomy between content and form, his large-scale abstract works always have an immersive dimension, inviting viewers to form a sensory relationship with them that is not only visual, but also sometimes tactile.
Untitled 2012 was first exhibited by the Pinault Collection at the monographic "Rudolf Stingel" show, which was held in 2013 at the Palazzo Grassi in Venice.
