Glazed ceramic sculpture with steel base

Sculpture: 107 × 813 × 94,6 cm
Overall dimensions (sculpture + base) : 236,5 × 81,3 × 94,6 cm,

This ceramic head of a woman by Thomas Schütte is remarkable for its technical mastery, its size, and its high level of detail. Impersonal and without any real-world reference, this woman is an archetype embodying a sense of serenity, particularly through her conspicuously closed eyes and her neutral expression. Yet while this woman seems to be there, with us, she remains absent, holding back. This work offers a striking example of the fine line that Thomas Schütte’s figurative sculpture so often walks, skimming the surface of reality without ever fully succumbing to it. The reflections on the work attest to a great mastery of ceramic glazes, with two layers of different colors revealed through cracks formed during firing.
