Fratelli
2012
Four patinated bronze on steel bases
Variable dimensions
The four large bronze busts that make up Fratelli are worlds away from traditional sculpture. Their forms and pedestals recall classical busts, but they are closer in spirit to drawings by Honoré Daumier, the 19th-century caricaturist, than to Roman portraits.
Created in 2012, they are arranged in a square. The viewer must stand in the centre to observe them. These "broken faces" elicit various reactions: they can be viewed humorously as satire, bring about a sense of anxiety or intimidate the viewer. The taste for paradox can be found in many of Schütte's sculptures.
Part of the Pinault Collection, Fratelli was first displayed in 2013 at the Punta della Dogana during the "Prima Materia" ("Raw Material") show.
