Dogpool (Logs)
2003-2008
Polychromed aluminum, wood, coated steel chain
213.4 x 171.5 x 151.1 cm (84 x 67 1/2 x 59 1/2 in.)
This sculpture formed by a Dalmatian-shaped inflatable canoe in polychrome aluminium suspended from the ceiling by four red chains is surprising because the canoe is used to store logs. The red chains associate the imagination of childhood with sexual fetishism.
Between 2003 and 2008, iconic contemporary artist Jeff Koons made Dogpool (Logs), which is highly characteristic of his exploration of the relationship between popular kitsch and high art. Here, he plays on the contrast between the inflatable toy’s apparent fragility and the solidity of the logs filling it, emphasising the gap between the object’s playful dimension and its vital function.
Koons' sculpture Dogpool (Logs), which is in the Pinault Collection, was presented during the 2009 exhibition "Un certain état du monde ?" (“A Certain State of the World?”) at the Garage Center for Contemporary Culture in Moscow.
