Dutch Couple

2007

Oil on canvas

259 x 351 x 3.5 cm (101 15/16 x 138 3/16 x 1 3/8 in.)

A profusion of shapes, colours and lines, Dutch Couple superimposes references. Smooth, glossy inflatable monkeys spread out over a Benday screen - a halftone print of lines of dots in primary colours - while white lines of negative silhouettes subtly add a third level of information rich in detail.

Dutch Couple is an oil on canvas from the Hulk Elvis series of paintings. These large, energetic, precise paintings combine and mythify the most diverse figurative and abstract motifs. Geishas, birds, and fictional characters mingle with landscapes that are sometimes realistic, sometimes exuberant. The images are manipulated and intertwined, resulting in spectacular inventions that endlessly stimulate the eye.

Jeff Koons’ Dutch Couple was presented for the first time by the Pinault Collection during the exhibition "Agony and Ecstasy" at Songeun Artspace in Seoul (2011).
