Backyard
2002
Oil-based jet on canvas
428 x 732 cm (168 1/2 x 288 3/16 in.)
Backyard, a collage over seven metres long, is a thematic and stylistic summary of Jeff Koons' art. It includes chains, inflatable animal toys and aluminium baskets haphazardly stacked on top of each other.
Made with oil inkjet, Backyard belongs the Popeye series begun by the artist in 2002. The aesthetics of collage and the contemporary art superstar’s kitschy imagination manifest themselves in a spectacular, even boisterous way. Blurring the boundaries between art and life, Koons turns provocation into beauty using the strategies of mass consumption.
This work was shown for the first time by the Pinault Collection during the 2009 exhibition "Mapping the Studio" at the Palazzo Grassi in Venice.
