Untitled (Baum 27)
2015
Oil on dibond
Panels: 125 x 250 cm (49 3/16 x 98 7/16 in.) (each) Overall dimensions: 375 x 250 cm (147 5/8 x 98 7/16 in.)
An oblong shape with curved, pointed ends covers the entire height of Untitled (Baum 27). It is meant to depict a tree trunk from which graphic, stylised lines sprout as branches and roots standing out on a white and red background.
The recurring tree motif is programmatic in Albert Oehlen's work, signalling his shift to abstraction in the late 1980s.
Always depicted with an exaggerated two-dimensionality eschewing realism, it appears as a minimal form, both curved and angular, offering new possible interpretations.
Untitled (Baum 27) was presented for the first time by the Pinault Collection at the 2018 "Cows by the Water" show at the Palazzo Grassi in Venice.
