Untitled

1991

Oil on canvas

130 × 130 cm (51 3/16 × 51 3/16 in.)

Like an all-over, the whole surface of Untitled is covered with paint. Wide, overlapping grey bands flow and blend over the entire tall canvas, intermittently revealing a brightly colored background.

This work attests to the evolution of Albert Oehlen's constantly active and renewed reflection on painting. He started out in the 1970s with figurative art before moving towards hybrid works tending towards abstraction. This 2017 work belongs to a new, even more radical phase where form completely vanishes in favour of colour and pure painting.

Untitled was first exhibited by the Pinault Collection at the 2018 "Cows by the Water" show at the Palazzo Grassi in Venice.
