Untitled
2017
Oil on canvas
250 × 250 cm (98 7/16 × 98 7/16 in.)
Weird patterns emerge from the profusion of brushstrokes, flat areas, sprays and drips, covering Untitled, transparent or spared in reserve from the colored mass.
Albert Oehlen has explored and pushed back painting’s technical and physical possibilities since beginning in the 1970s. Eschewing all dogma, he proceeds by trial and error and improvisation, showing great freedom of implementation. He says, "For me, freedom means playing. It doesn't mean being in a vacuum and getting excited about everything and anything. It means playing by your own rules.”
Untitled was first exhibited by the Pinault Collection at the 2018 "Cows by the Water" show at the Palazzo Grassi in Venice.
