Untitled (Baum 9)
2014
Oil on dibond
Overall dimensions: 250 x 250 cm (98 7/16 x 98 7/16 in.)
The tree in Untitled (Baum 9) seems to grow out of nowhere in the middle of an abstract space. More graphic than organic, its odd outline with stylised roots and branches emerges from the centre of the white canvas, whose neutrality is broken only by a shading of red.
Since its first occurrence in the late 1980s, the tree has become a leitmotiv in Albert Oehlen's work. Always depicted as a minimal, flat form eschewing any literal depiction, it is closely associated with his uninterrupted reflection on abstraction in painting.
Untitled (Baum 9) was presented for the first time by the Pinault Collection at the 2018 "Cows by the Water" show at the Palazzo Grassi in Venice.
