Untitled
Oil on canvas
180 × 150 × 3 cm (70 7/8 × 59 1/16 × 1 3/16 in.)
Many brushstrokes cover the large Untitled canvas. They overlap and intersect in a riot of grey-beige tones, revealing the traces of a background with brighter tones.
"First you take a step towards ugliness, and then somehow you end up where it's beautiful.” With this idea as his guide, Albert Oehlen has explored painting since the 1970s. In this example, his painting, which he describes as bad painting, makes no attempt to hide flaws, messy brushstrokes or drips of paint. He constantly improvises, taking a trial-and-error approach to the surface of the canvas.
Untitled was first exhibited by the Pinault Collection at the 2018 "Cows by the Water" show at the Palazzo Grassi in Venice.
