Untitled

2016

Oil on canvas

180 × 150 × 3 cm (70 7/8 × 59 1/16 × 1 3/16 in.)

Between transparency and saturation, Untitled plays with the perceptive states of painting, starting with blurry effects. Its abstract composition of many flat colours is a vast pictorial improvisation showing great skill.

Albert Oehlen has probed painting’s technical and physical possibilities since he began working in the early 1970s. Setting out from figuration to reach abstraction, his work is not subject to any dogma or programme. He continually seeks to break free from the many conventions that govern great painting. He says, "For me, freedom means playing. It doesn't mean being in a vacuum and getting excited about everything and anything. It means playing by your own rules.”

Untitled was first exhibited by the Pinault Collection at the 2018 "Cows by the Water" show at the Palazzo Grassi in Venice.
