Child of W.W. II

2007-2011

Mixed Media

40.6 x 34.9 cm (16 x 13 3/4 in.)

Barely sketched, the yellowish silhouette of a headless and limbless child, almost abstract, appears against a gray backdrop, lost in a series of frames.

The result of a bold mixed technique of painting and collage that American artist Llyn Foulkes has been exploring since the 1950s, this work strikes by its simplicity and evocative power. Foulkes' To Mother and O Baby, also held in the Pinault Collection, follow up with more details on this aesthetics of the fragmented child-body as testament to the absurd that imbues his art and is reminiscent of Dadaism.

Child of W.W.II is among a dozen similar small formats by Llyn Foulkes held in the Pinault Collection and presented together in the group show À Triple tour (“triple locked”) at the Paris Conciergerie, in 2013.
