Lobster

The unmissable Lobster (2007-2012), a monumental stainless steel sculpture featuring a lobster-shaped inflatable pool toy, is an iconic work by the American artist. It is part of a body of work on inflatables initiated in the 1970s which has become a recurring subject in his work since the Popeye series in the early 2000s.

The crustacean evokes both pop art and the ready-made, references to art history and mass market objects. It evokes surrealist and Dadaist works, such as the recurring motif of Elsa Schiaparelli's hats and dresses in the 1930s or Salvador Dalí's Lobster Telephone in 1936, while the animal's antennae, stretched out like a thin moustache, recall both that of the Catalan artist and of Marcel Duchamp's L.H.O.O.Q.

This work is presented for the first time by Pinault Collection in the exhibition "Jeff Koons Mucem" in 2021.
