Morning, Chapter 30

Morning, Chapter 30 superimposes two differently shaped wooden panels, a rectangle fitting into a square, whose surfaces are entirely covered with pictorial motifs. One has exactly symmetrical algorithmic structures, the other is centred with slanting striations dotted by spots. Despite their different respective forms, their colours are in harmony and they create a similar vibrating sensation.

This work reflects on the value of the frame as well as the support in painting. It belongs to an eponymous series or "chapter" by Rebecca H. Quaytman. She superimposes various anachronistic and heterogeneous media, from silkscreen printing to tempera and gouache, resulting in a work that breaks down the barriers between genres. It goes beyond Op Art and abstract expressionism, among others.

Morning, Chapter 30 was first presented by the Pinault Collection at the 2019 "Luogo e Segni" ("Place and Signs") show at the Punta della Dogana in Venice.
