Ark, Chapter 10 (Stuart Sherman Passing By)

2007

Silkscreen ink, gesso on wood

50.8 x 82.2 cm (20 x 32 3/8 in.)

Behind the trembling, abstract surface of a screen streaked by thin horizontal stripes, the bust of a bald man seen in profile emerges from the frame. In a ghostly montage, it splits and fades according to a progression of movement.

This portrait of Stuart Sherman belongs to Rebecca H. Quaytman's Ark, Chapter 10 series. It speaks the language of both photography, especially through the chrono-photographic breakdown of movement, and of painting through the choice of the silkscreen technique and optical effects borrowed from Op Art. Abolishing the boundaries between abstract and figurative art, the artist seeks to implement "thought images" that both stand alone and dialogue with other series or "chapters" as she designs them.

Chapter 10 (Stuart Sherman Passing By) was first shown at the "Luogo e Segni" ("Place and Signs") exhibition at the Punta della Dogana in Venice in 2019.
