Spine, Chapter 20 (Silberkuppe)
2010
Silkscreen ink and gesso on wood
101.6 x 63 cm (40 x 24 13/16 in.)
A dazzlingly white light source radiating thin black and white streaks in every direction seems to emerge from the panel’s rectangular centre. This encounter between centre and periphery engenders a vibrating sensation that disturbs the viewer's gaze.
For two decades Rebecca H. Quaytman has composed a pictorial score in which the works are both autonomous and interdependent. Her "thought images", as she calls them, are like fragments of a larger whole linked by formal, narrative, poetic or metaphorical relationships. Her free yet methodical work combines figuration, abstraction and many visual references, such as Op Art in this particular example.
Spine, Chapter 20 (Silberkuppe) was presented for the first time by the Pinault Collection at the 2019 "Luogo e Segni" ("Place and Signs") show at the Punta della Dogana in Venice.
