A precarious combination of a bicycle and a street sign transformed into a coat rack, Central Park West finds its balance despite its apparent instability. This illusion of fragility comes from the very nature of the materials employed, rusty and unusable, which Hammons found on his city walks.
By combining urban elements and artefacts from domestic life, symbolised by the shirts on hangers, this composition blurs the line between the public and private spheres. The interaction of ordinary street materials shows Hammons' interest in the poetic and symbolic recomposition of found objects.
Made in the early 1990s, a major turning point in Hammons' career, the sculpture Central Park West is now part of the Pinault Collection. It was first exhibited at the "Sequence 1" show in 2007 at the Palazzo Grassi.
