Just Ducky

Mixed Media

45.7 x 40.6 x 5.1 cm (18 x 16 x 2 in.)

The anonymous figure, with eyes hidden under a childlike collage, looks at us through a large smile stained with blood. This carnivorous, icy smile is the only element that faces the viewer in a mysterious, 3/4 portrait. The ordinary materials used in this work reinforce the impression of humanity in the terrifying portrait.

An infinitely sinister vision, Just Ducky is not an isolated case in the work of Llyn Foulkes as it belongs to his famous series of savagely mutilated portraits, “Bloody Heads”, begun in 1970. Ten years later, he began to recurrently include characters from the world of cartoons, like Mickey Mouse, or, here, Donald Duck.

The painting Just Ducky by Llyn Foulkes belongs to the Pinault Collection. The work was first shown at the 2013 “Prima Materia” (“Raw Material”) exhibition at the Punta della Dogana.
