The Evangelists
2003
Four stainless steel nickel plated glass cabinets containing scientific and medical apparatus and religious iconography
180 x 360 x 25 cm (70 7/8 x 141 3/4 x 9 13/16 in.)
These four glass and stainless steel display cases designed by Damien Hirst are like gloomy cabinets of curiosities. Scientific and medical devices are alongside human skulls, chalices, rosaries, religious books, crucifixes, palettes, brushes and Bunsen burners while a host of other sordid objects fill the shelves behind blood-stained glass.
A major international contemporary artist, Hirst is known for his installations exploring the themes of death, art and science. The Evangelists (2003) recalls the medicine cabinets he has made since 1988 or his animals trapped in formaldehyde aquariums.
Hirst's sculpture was presented for the first time at the 2014 "Art Lovers" show at the Grimaldi Forum Monaco.
