Sinner
2011
Silver, paint
Overall dimensions: 173.2 × 48 × 48 cm (68 3/16 × 18 7/8 × 18 7/8 in.)
This bust covered in coral up to the top of the skull shines with disturbing anonymity. The bare shoulders have a vibrant fleshy texture while the head is cast into a single smooth surface. It is squeezed by a vice-like metal mask with just two small holes for breathing.
This sculpture by Damien Hirst highlights silver’s various aesthetic possibilities. Penitent, also in the Pinault Collection, is a pure, radical vision of redemption through corporal punishment, a theme found in the artist's more traditional works as well.
Hirst's Sinner was exhibited for the first time during the 2017 "Treasures from the Wreck of the Unbelievable" show at the Palazzo Grassi.
