A strange figure stands against a light blue backdrop, sustained by a narrow, used wooden plank bearing inscriptions in pencil. The posture and physical anomaly of this prominent female bust devoid of head and arms, its waist covered by a large piece of cloth, reminds of the famous Venus de Milo.
American artist Llyn Foulkes plays constantly with art history, placing prestigious works of art on the same level as vernacular photography. Both are for him creative materials that support the absurd he cultivates in his oeuvre. It is no accident that this artwork nods to the pioneering experimentations of Dadaist artist Hanna Höch both in its technique of collage and its formal composition.
The Two I Love the Most is part of a series of a dozen artworks by Llyn Foulkes held in the Pinault Collection and presented together in the group show À Triple tour (“triple locked”) at the Paris Conciergerie, in 2013.
