Untitled
2016
Oil on canvas
30 × 37.5 × 2 cm (11 13/16 × 14 3/4 × 13/16 in.)
An artist-in-residence in Lens in 2018, Lucas Arruda paints landscapes from memory in his studio. Light is their main subject. Untitled is part of this series. Its variations of grey and blue tones make it look like a night-time seascape. White hatching lends the work a turbulent yet steady sense of movement. Its dreamlike quality and small size encourage contemplation and meditation. The artist shows us that a small work can take up "a lot of space".
