Like a dog returns to its vomit twice (80)

2005

Eighty reworked and improved etchings from Francisco Goya's "Los Caprichos"

44.8 x 37.2 cm (17 5/8 x 14 5/8 in.) (each, framed)

Like a Dog Returns to its Vomit Twice features 80 prints by Francisco de Goya "reworked and improved" by Jake and Dinos Chapman. Molluscs, insects, animals, clowns, organs and monsters painted directly on the original prints in gouache and ink populate the famous Spanish master’s whimsical, macabre world.

Part-creation, part-vandalism, this work is part of the "rectification" series the Chapman brothers initiated in 2003 with Insult to Injury, which returned to Goya’s Disasters of War series. Members of the Young British Artists group, through a provocative, irreverent process they highlight an artistic filiation from the Middle Ages to comics via Goya based on an aesthetics of hybridisation and terror.

Like a Dog Returns to its Vomit Twice was shown for the first time in 2009 at the "Mapping the Studio" exhibition at the Palazzo Grassi.
