HWAMI

Born in the district of Gutu in Zimbabwe in 1993, Kudzanai-Violet Hwami grew up in South Africa before moving to London (United Kingdom) where she studied at the Wimbledon College of Arts. Hwami is a painter who reveals a vision of Southern Africa stimulated by her experiences of displacement and the geographic dislocation inherent to the diaspora. Very often, her paintings are portraits of close or wider family members in which she assembles visual fragments stemming from myriads of sources, such as online imagery and personal photographs, inspired by the aesthetic of comics, which she is partial to. More broadly, her work raises questions pertaining to the representation of Black bodies, at the crossroads of an examination of race, gender, sexuality and spirituality.
