Born in Nairobi (Kenya) in 1984, Michael Armitage is a painter who studied at the Slade School of Fine Art and at the Royal College of Arts (London , United Kingdom). He now lives between these two cities. His paintings and drawings give substance to real or fantastical stories that are rooted in the sociopolitical context of East Africa. Although his huge compositions seem influenced by Western painting of the nineteenth century and painters such as Paul Gauguin, Édouard Manet or even Francisco de Goya, they also contain direct references to current political events in Kenya, as well as to the local mythologies and spiritual traditions in which he was brought up.
