Untitled
2016
Oil on canvas
30 × 37 cm (11 13/16 × 14 9/16 in.)
The paintings by Arruda, artist-in-residence at Lens in 2018, are on the the borderline between figurative and abstract art. They are both realistic landscapes and mental landscapes. All of his work is marked by the power of nature. He draws inspiration from his experience of the tropical forest.
Constructed around a horizon line at the bottom of the picture, Untitled reflects the tenuous alliance between exploring light and introspection. Its subtle shades of brown create a mood recalling some of Victor Hugo's seascape washes or a beaten earth surface.
