Sofia et les talents merveilleux des artistes de rue

2004

Photocollage, plastiline, wood

290 x 270 x 24 cm (114 3/16 x 106 5/16 x 9 7/16 in.)

A dense, colourful crowd gathers around a spectacle that rises into blue skies as scooters ride on a road in the background. The title helps to set the entertaining tone of the odd, hybrid figures stretching out across the cloudy background like constellations.

Since the 1970s, the Austrian artists’ collective Gelitin has been creating a new world where chaos and absurdity reign supreme. Its four members’ performances and two-dimensional works, sometimes created within the exhibition space’s walls, create poetic yet unsettling scenes. Worthy of Dadaist irony, collage fully participates in the work’s grotesque, carnival-like dimension.

Sofia and the Wonderful Talents of Street Artists was exhibited for the first time by the Pinault Collection at the 2009 major group show "Mapping the Studio" at the Punta della Dogana and Palazzo Grassi in Venice.
