Anne Imhof (born in Germany, in 1978) is constantly questioning what makes a painting: in one of her first performances, even before she went to art school in Frankfurt, she invited two boxers and a music group to a table dance bar. She instructed the boxers to fight until the music stopped, and the musicians to play until the fight was over.

Anne Imhof says that through this violent happening she discovered a way of producing images, tableaux vivants. Painting plays an essential role in her practice, which also includes drawing, music, and film. Her abstractions are composed like her performances and become fetishes for the melancholy of contemporary society. Here, the "Natures Mortes" (still lifes) are no longer those of art history, but abstract landscapes in striped metallic paint, the vanitases of our time.
