Striding Figure II (Ghost)

2012

Bronze

505.5 x 200.7 x 315 cm (199 x 79 x 124 in.)

The bronze figure’s monumental body seems to be in an advanced state of decomposition, but a powerful stride endows it with amazing strength. Many of Houseago's sculptures share this theme.

The work’s title refers to the legendary redemptive ghosts in Shakespeare's plays. Like those phantoms, Ghost suggests that these figures are dead people kept alive by the force of memory and haunted by incompleteness.

Exhibited for the first time during the "Debout !" ("Stand Up!") show at the Couvent des Jacobins in Rennes, Striding Figure II (Ghost) exemplifies Houseago's unique artistic approach.
