Sleeping Boy I

2012

Tuf-Cal, hemp, iron rebar

92.7 x 298.5 x 134.6 cm (36 1/2 x 117 1/2 x 53 in.)

The pose of Sleeping Boy may recall that of either a mannequin or a resting flâneur.

The artist created a surface on which he developed every part of his sculpture before creating the final composition. He calls this "flat working", a technique that, paradoxically, resuscitates monumental sculpture by knocking it down. This modus operandi enables him to think of his sculptures not as figures but rather as landscapes.

First exhibited in 2018 at the "Debout !" ("Stand Up!") show at the Couvent des Jacobins in Rennes, Sleeping Boy I attests to Houseago's unique approach to sculpture.
