Dio

Video projection (loop)

A procession of a hundred men in white shirts and jeans parades through the gardens of the Villa Medici in Rome. Carrying a human-sized wooden cross on their shoulders, they are heading to Saint Peter’s Basilica on an unusual pilgrimage.

Designed and filmed by Adel Abdessemed, the procession features extras retracing Christ’s steps during the Passion. Only one part was kept. It is shown in a video loop lasting less than three minutes. Here Christ is replaced by a crowd of individuals treading the same path. Their expressions range from excitement at taking part in a performance to detachment (a man looks at his watch), adding a collective, almost playful dimension to Christ’s ordeal.

Dio was shown for the first time by the Pinault Collection in 2014 during the "Art Lovers" exhibition at the Grimaldi Forum Monaco.
