Cri
2013
Ivory
140.5 x 114 x 44 cm (55 5/16 x 44 7/8 x 17 5/16 in.)
Based on an iconic photo taken by Nick Ut during the Vietnam War, Cry takes us back to a tumultuous time in recent history.
By making the picture three-dimensional, Adel Abdessemed makes it seem as though the young girl is physically present. Made of a noble material, ivory, this human-scale work brings us face-to-face with the girl’s pain and the madness of men. She becomes a symbol of the violence present in any society.
Abdessemed's Cry, which is in the Pinault Collection, was exhibited during the "Debout !" ("Stand Up!") show at the Couvent des Jacobins in Rennes in 2018.
