Appah

Born in 1987 in Accra (Ghana), Gideon Appah is a painter whose first medium as a child was the charcoal with which his grandmother cooked their meals at home. His artworks are an ode to his hometown of Accra, Ghana’s capital city, and they conjure up scenes of daily life in gathering spaces such as hairdresser salons and sewing workshops. Appah often paints on found and glued posters, engravings, newspapers, photographs and film photos, creating dreamlike worlds, notably inspired by fauvism, that examine personal stories, as well as national histories and local mythologies.
