Born in Stockton, California in 1969, Kara Walker is an artist living in New York (United States), renowned for her paper silhouettes representing historical stories haunted by sexuality, violence and enslavement. Through deliberately violent images of a sexual nature, her work exposes the physical and psychological traumatism relating to the legacy of slavery, particularly in the American South. Since 2007, she has focused on former American president Barack Obama, whose figure reflects many ambiguities with which the African-American community is confronted, in a country where racism is omnipresent.
