Southeast Africa

The names of 25 Southeast African ethnic groups that have suffered genocide, including Anuak, Kikuyu, Luo and Tutsi, are soberly written in charcoal on newsprint on a wall.

This graphic installation entitled Southeast Africa is part of Paulo Nazareth's political and memorial work. More specifically, it belongs to his series Produtos do Genocídio (Products of Genocide). The Brazilian artist paints a painful posthumous portrait, also sombrely embodied in words, of ethnic groups that have been exterminated, acculturated or partly decimated since the beginning of the colonial period in Africa. Despite its simplicity, the installation takes on the value of a memorial.

Southeast Africa will be presented for the first time by the Pinault Collection during the “Au-delà de la couleur” ("Beyond Colour") show at the Couvent des Jacobins in Rennes in June 2021.
