The video Para Cuando Ellos Me Busquen En El Desierto – For when they look for me in the desert shows Paulo Nazareth sat in a desert; he takes his shoe laces off, puts his shoes on backwards and starts walking. With this clever trick, his footprints go in the opposite direction of his steps and thus mislead whoever is chasing him, whether border guards or others. He tramples on the sand, puts the camera down and walks away towards the horizon.
Nazareth lives in Belo Horizonte, the starting point of all his travels, which are the basis of his largely autobiographical oeuvre. However, he brilliantly dismantles this metaphor of identity with his gags, which humorously tackle the specific social and political issues of the so-called ‘Latino’ communities.
The video Para Cuando Ellos Me Busquen En El Desierto de Paulo Nazareth was first presented by the Pinault Collection in the exhibition Dancing With Myself at the Museum Folkwang in Essen (2016).
