Miroir d'eau

White marks on solid white, Miroir d’eau (Mirror of Water) calls in a strictly regular composition a contrast of hues. The ten marks made with a no. 50 brush are applied in a quincunx pattern, each separated by a 30 cm space. The paper canvas is thus entirely “not covered” in Niele Toroni’s words, with paint and voids thus creating together a “shape without a preconceived idea”.

With the diptych Miroir d’eau, Toroni continues his radical, precise work. He developed the pictorial style that characterises this work in 1966. and repeated it since then on all kinds of supports. Rejecting the subjectivity of art, he preferred to question the authenticity notably through challenging the contemporary figure of the artist.

The painting Miroir d’eau by Niele Toroni was first shown by the Pinault Collection at the 2016 “Accrochage” ("Hanging") exhibition at the Punta della Dogana.
