The framework, laid bare, constitutes the useless and sad structure of a torn sheet of paper. Is this vandalism the result of an act perpetrated in drawing by the artist? The incongruity of the iron square supported on the wood structure recalls the motif of the television screen and confirms the idea of a collapsed artistic construction, the staging of destruction itself.
Ambiguously entitled Schermo Carta Rotto, i.e. torn paper screen, this is a work with a strong visual impact that moves away from Fabio Mauri’s habitual “Screens”. A prominent artist of the Italian avant-garde, fiercely committed against all forms of authoritarianism, he addresses the danger represented in his eyes by television, which in the 1950s became the symbolic object of the postwar period.
The panel Schermo Carta Rotto by Fabio Mauri was first presented by the Pinault Collection at the 2016 “Accrochage” (“Hanging”) exhibition at the Punta della Dogana.
