Una Tasca di Cinema

1959

Painted canvas

68.5 x 50 x 6 cm (26 15/16 x 19 11/16 x 2 3/8 in.)

Una Tasca di Cinema (A pocket of cinema) opens a muted window on a superposition of white surfaces made up of various textures. While the central canvas with bevelled edges is perfectly stretched, its infinitely smooth finish is still stressed by the moving appearance of the lower section of the painting. Despite the absence of the visual element that would have the power to capture our attention, this plain surface reflects the light as it absorbs our gazes, which sink in a contemplation of emptiness.

The pictorial oeuvre of Fabio Mauri, painter and filmmaker, comprises mostly “Schermi”, literally depictions of screens, generally blank. These paintings and collages are direct references to television and the issues that accompanied its entry into households around the world from the 1950s onwards.

The painting Una Tasca di Cinema by Fabio Mauri was first shown by the Pinault Collection at the 2016 “Accrochage” (“Hanging”) exhibition at the Punta della Dogana.
