Untitled
2011
Wood and paint
40.5 x 20.8 x 15.2 cm (15 15/16 x 8 3/16 x 6 in.)
The skeletal structure captures the asymmetry of empty spaces: emptiness within four boards and emptiness freed that assumes the extension of the wood support in the exhibition space. But the air stumbles on the work, surrounds it, floods it before emerging from it. This rigid, painted wood composition is not a receptacle of anything in itself, but rather a place of transition, inviting to a perpetual movement.
This untitled work perfectly exemplifies the use that Fernanda Gomes makes of simple materials, like metal, cement, stone or, here, wood. Alone or at times paired with daily objects, waste and other findings of daily life, wood is a recurrent medium in the work of the Brazilian artist who explores both its anonymous character and its poetic potentials.
The work Untitled, created by Fernanda Gomes in 2011, is part of the Pinault Collection. It was first shown at the 2016 “Accrochage” ("Hanging") exhibition at the Punta della Dogana.
