Concrete and metal

27.6 x 11 x 11 cm (10 7/8 x 4 5/16 x 4 5/16 in.)

Like the aggregate of a destroyed and broken down construction, this untitled sculpture seems to tell the ruin of a building recent enough to be made of concrete and metal bars. By combining these two materials in a deeply rough assemblage, the creative act inherent in this work cannot be separated from a powerful suggestion of destruction.

Fernanda Gomes creates a dialogue between mundane, even ridiculous materials, into sculptures that at the same time move with their immediacy and mesmerise with their rigour. She also handles stone, wood and objects of daily life, as many “things” a priori insignificant from which she extracts intrinsic qualities.

The sculpture Untitled, made by Fernanda Gomes in 2012, is part of the Pinault Collection. It was first shown at the 2016 “Accrochage” ("Hanging") exhibition at the Punta della Dogana.
