Untitled

Wood, paint and stone

30.2 x 30.2 x 3 cm (11 7/8 x 11 7/8 x 1 3/16 in.)

The function of a square is usually that of enclosing. The one shown by Fernanda Gomes in Untitled fits this simple definition: four wood panels painted and placed next to each other form a vertical fence that barely stands out from the wall, enclosing the empty space that supports them. A stone is nestled in the bottom right-hand corner, where it fits the straight edges perfectly, without altering the ideal stability of the whole.

The Brazilian artist assembles trivial materials in effective compositions with deep reflective abilities: from the silent eloquence of these objects engenders a poetics of confrontation. By playing freely with what she calls “things”, she navigates between rigour and emotion, detachment and displacement.

La sculpture Untitled, created by Fernanda Gomes in 2010, is part of the Pinault Collection. It was first shown at the 2016 “Accrochage” ("Hanging") exhibition at the Punta della Dogana.
