A nuclear mushroom stands out in the center of a composition of brightly colored bits of torn paper. Speed, vitality and explosiveness are words that come to mind when contemplating Piotr Uklanski's Sans titre (the Bomb). Both idyllic and disastrous, The Bomb is part of a series of collages that the artist initiated in 2000.
This collage of bits of torn paper painted with gouache and mounted on plywood uses a “sleepy and peripheral” handicraft technique, in the words of exhibition curator Francesco Bonami, which doesn't seem fit for radical innovations. By bringing this folk handicraft back to life through impressive pop compositions, Piotr Uklanski interrogates the very notion of painting and develops an imagery of war and disaster.
Held in the Pinault Collection, Sans titre (the Bomb), was first shown in 2006 at the Where Are We Going? exhibition at Palazzo Grassi, in Venice.
