Hybrid animal, processional object or shamanic fetish? Cultural Fusion fascinates as much as it questions. By juxtaposing masks from various African cultures, David Hammons challenges racial stereotypes in the art world. "We all make ethnic art. Andy Warhol was an ethnic artist; he viewed the art world from a white man's perspective. But as soon as a black person does the same, it's ethnic art," he says.
Hammons' deeply committed work explores the African-American community’s struggles and aspirations through an endless array of media. He uses found objects to which he gives a poetic and political meaning by associating them and staging them with other objects.
Hammons' work Cultural Fusion was first shown by the Pinault Collection at the 2009 "Mapping the Studio" exhibition at the Palazzo Grassi.
