Untitled (to Saskia, Sixtina and Thordis)

1973

304 fluorescent neon lights (40 pink, 38 green, 38 yellow, 188 blue)

244 x 500 cm (96 1/16 x 196 7/8 in.)

Created in 1973, Untitled (to Saskia, Sixtina and Thordis) is displayed on two opposing 50 m-long walls in a ‘blind’ room. On each side, a row of horizontal blue fluorescent tubes is punctuated by yellow and pink fluorescent tubes. The inverted symmetry chosen by the artist gives rhythm to the display and brings rigor and harmony. The viewer is invited to walk around a scene where light is both the conductor and the protagonist.

Exploring the ways in which light sculpts space, Dan Flavin is developing an oeuvre based on the use of fluorescent tubes, which are industrially produced. A monumental example of this practice, Untitled (to Saskia, Sixtina and Thordis) creates a “situation” where are usual references are being replayed.

Dan Flavin's installation Untitled (to Saskia, Sixtina and Thordis) was first shown by the Pinault Collection in the exhibition The Passage of Time at the Tri Postal in Lille, in 2007-2008.
