Untitled (Money can't buy me)
1983
Photograph and type on paper
11.5 x 23 cm (4 1/2 x 9 1/16 in.)
Using the visual codes of film noir posters, Untitled (Money Can't Buy Me) features a grim-faced man holding a gun and accompanied by another character. Their gazes, like the weapon, are pointed at the viewer. Slanting words at the top give the work a title in a similar vein.
Since 1979, Barbara Kruger has made singular photographic works based on images found mainly in films or advertising to which she gives fictitious titles with a strong moral dimension. Presented as slick posters with striking slogans, her montages offer a sharp critique of contemporary society, especially consumerism and sexism.
Untitled (Money Can't Buy Me) was shown for the first time by the Pinault Collection during the exhibition "Mapping the studio" (2009-2011) at the Punta della Dogana and Palazzo Grassi in Venice.
